Brigg first grew as a crossing point on the River Ancholme, taking its name from the bridge constructed to make east-west journeys easier. It has a colourful history of markets and fairs and is today a thriving market town with a variety of events.

With its traditional street market and around 150 specialist shops centred mainly in the pedestrianised area, the town is certainly an enticing prospect for shoppers. Instead of the familiar high street names associated with any shopping trip, you will find local people who place particular importance on customer care and the personal touch run the majority of shops in Brigg.

Once densely populated, they have been transformed to small specialist shopping outlets. Brigg has something for everyone, a fine mix of quality gift retailers, luxury chocolates, designer goldsmiths, handmade nursery furniture, fashion boutiques, hairdressing salons, health foods and homeopathic remedies. Brigg has all the simple pleasures of market town shopping including the traditional florists, haberdasheries, bakeries and butchers where you can purchase the finest selection of goods and produce from families who have traded in the town for generations.

Just as in Medieval days, Brigg is at its liveliest on market days. On Thursdays the town's market, which dates from a charter granted early in the 13th century, takes over the Market Place and the whole length of Wrawby St. A traditional street market teeming with gifts, plants, home-wares and fashion accessories. If you enjoy bargain hunting the Thursday auction, on Station Road, of produce, plants and bric-a-brac is where you'll find bargains galore, definitely a more exciting way to shop.

On the 4th Saturday of each month there is a thriving Farmers' Market. You can buy the best in fresh and wholeshome local produce, including ostrich, venison, beef and pork meats, goats and sheep's milk cheese, organic vegetables, breads, cakes and soaps directly from the producers. There is usually an opportunity to taste before you buy and to pick up some useful cooking tips.
